We exist to develop technical renewable energy storage solutions supporting the transition.
mc2 Energy was founded in 2014, united by the goal of advancing sustainable energy solutions. Our mission: to lead in the development of innovative renewable energy storage technologies, enabling a smooth transition towards a greener future.
As the shift from fossil fuels to renewable sources accelerates, the demand for large-scale energy storage becomes critical. In 2016, we proposed to the NSW Government a revolutionary pumped hydro storage project in Illawarra, using a pioneering saltwater concept to offer a sustainable, cost-effective storage solution without new reservoirs. This approach, strategically positioning storage near renewable sources and industrial demands, aims to cut transmission upgrade costs and minimize environmental impacts.
With New South Wales transitioning away from coal-fired power towards renewables, the absence of sufficient long-term storage risks energy supply volatility and increased costs, threatening industry viability and clean energy jobs. mc2 Energy is leading the effort to overcome these challenges, focusing on storage solutions that support a stable, sustainable energy future.
Our commitment to renewable energy innovation is unwavering. We’re dedicated to developing solutions that ensure a reliable, economically viable energy supply, driving Australia towards a cleaner, greener future.
Opportunity born out of necessity
mc2 Energy is now proposing a pumped hydro system using entirely freshwater, with a lower reservoir constructed in the ocean adjacent to Port Kembla, while retaining the original advantages of minimal environmental impact and proximity to renewable generation and load.
In October 2021, the NSW Government opened Expressions of Interest for Clean Manufacturing Precinct decarbonisation roadmaps as part of the New Low Carbon Industry Foundations program, which also includes Hydrogen Hubs for the Illawarra and Hunter. With the increasing urgency for long-duration storage solutions to support the energy transition, a new proposal was created for the development of a Port Kembla Pumped Hydro Energy Storage facility. There are many synergies now apparent by also constructing integrated new ammonia (NH3) hydrogen (H2) storage and Port facilities for their export and supporting green steel production.

We’re supporting a safe and affordable energy transition for NSW.
In 2022, the mc2 Energy joint venture separated with Chris Waring retaining mc2 Energy and the Illawarra assets, including the Port Kembla Pumped Hydro, while co-founder Ross Garnaut retains other Pumped Hydro assets. Key advisers are GHD, ILF, AMOG, Hamilton Locke and Pottinger.
