As a professional research scientist, Chris is fully aware of the consequences of continuing to emit large amounts of fossil CO₂ into the atmosphere and motivated to contribute where most effective.  The Port Kembla Pumped Hydro Project is a small contribution to the global decarbonisation task, yet a significant piece of the NSW energy transition.

Chris recognised decarbonisation of the NSW energy supply and transition to renewable energy sources requires a complimentary large energy storage capacity, including the development of Pumped Hydro Energy Storage (PHES) sites.  In 2014 Chris co-founded mc² Energy with Prof. Ross Garnaut, to take specific advantageous PHES sites from concept to fruition.  On the back of Chris’ work an Australian patent was granted to mc² Energy for novel implementation; A hydroelectric generation system and a method for hydroelectric generation # 2015901905.  In 2022, Ross resigned as a director mc² Energy to pursue other interests and Chris pushes forward with mc² Energy PHES site development and approvals.

Prior to resignation in 2020, Chris Waring was a Principal Research Scientist at the Institute for Environmental Research, within Australian Nuclear Science and Technology Organisation (ANSTO).
