Pumped Hydro technology

How Pumped Hydro works

The missing link in the energy transition

Pumped Hydro Energy Storage is the most effective solution to ensure a safe and reliable low-carbon energy transition.

What is pumped hydro?

  1. Energy is stored
  2. Water returns to the upper reservoir
  3. Energy is generated
  4. Energy is sent to the grid

Pumped hydro stores excess energy generated during times of high energy generation, such as mid-day solar, and releases it during periods of high demand, often in the evening.

Through the use of two reservoirs at different elevations, water is pumped from the lower reservoir to the upper reservoir when there is a surplus in power generation.

When demand increases, water is released back to the lower reservoir, spinning turbines and generating electricity. This process effectively supports renewable energy storage, as solar and wind energy generation can be intermittent and difficult to predict.

By effectively storing excess renewable energy, pumped hydro energy helps to stabilise national electricity networks, support energy security, and reduce greenhouse gas emissions.

As New South Wales phases out coal and transitions to renewable energy sources, energy storage is essential.

New South Wales will continue to require a growing range of energy storage types to support the green industry and to secure grid supplies when the weather isn’t kind for renewables. These storage types include:
Household batteries
Car batteries
Grid batteries

PORT KEMBLA HYRDO PROJECT

Supporting a safe and reliable energy transition

mc2 Energy proposes a pumped hydro project located at Port Kembla, within the Wollongong City area, the third largest city in New South Wales and home to 310,000 people. It is the site of a Renewable Energy Zone (REZ), one of five regions earmarked for significant renewable energy projects.

The proposed Port Kembla Pumped Hydro Project (PKPH) will provide a critical piece of the energy mix: storage. It will support energy and water security and include significant community benefits.

COMMUNITY, ENERGY, WATER AND TRANSPORT

A comprehensive solution for New South Wales

Pumped Hydro Storage is not a stand-alone solution. The project has given thoughtful consideration to how it supports the economic, environmental, and social goals for New South Wales.

In addition to the pumped hydro facilities, the project includes several innovative infrastructure components, including a new breakwater, proposed desalination plant, and space for a clean industry manufacturing hub.
